Homework #1 (5) Research a gallery/museum that focuses on new media and describe their program, the types of media that they employ, and some of their artists.
Jack Straw Productions is a non-profit new media arts center in Seattle that focuses but is not limited exclusively to multidisciplinary audio arts. Not only do they feature the works of new media audio artists, they provide a facility for local artists to collaborate and create using sound and audio technology. Jack Straw Productions has the mission of fostering creativity in the audio arts and facillitating communication of such art and ideas to audiences through audio art. They do so by providing a recording studio as well as various forms of art and technology education in the realm of audio arts for all ages and levels of experience even offering artist residencies with their Artist Support Program, Gallery Residency Program and Writers Program.
The Jack Straw New Media Gallery has various installations of audio art, although it is a physical space the gallery’s audience is not limited to experience the art at the gallery and can also experience the works through the Jack Straw Radio or through their internet gallery. The multiple ways of experiencing the art is true to the new media culture, in the sense that new media embraces technology and how it can enhance art and the way art is experienced. This new media gallery is spreading audio art to listeners everywhere. Some of the gallery’s most recent artists have been, Perri Lynch, Lara Swimmer and Robert Zimmer with their exhibition CARTASONIC, Yann Novak and his exhibit Blue.Hour, Stelios Manousakis’s The Network Is A Blind Space, Beth Fleenor’s Mother May I: Work in Progress Phase 1, Carlisle Roveto’s Sympatico and Ellen Sollod and Johanna Melamed’s Outside In/ Inside Out: The Inner Life of Jack. Their installations and exhibits vary some weaving together the audio and visual experience through visuals and contemporary recordings while others are interactive audio experiences.
