Joanna Spitzner

Homework #2 (3) Research a media art teacher and describe how s/he uses technology/media in his/her art class.

Joanna Spitzner is the Department Chair of Art, Design and Transmedia’s Department of Foundation and an Associate Professor at Syracuse University, she teaches a course that is a requirement in the foundation core in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Time Arts.

“Time Arts aims to explore ways in which to make art with time as its foundation. Various media and many approaches are investigated in relation to conceptual, cultural, formal, and technical ways in which to shape a work that unfolds in time. Students learn how conceptual art, performance art, sound, animation, video, and computer technology can be a basis for artmaking.”

At the beginning of the semester the students set up a blog to document their experiences in the class with the intention of introducing them to the concept of documenting and depicting art and emotions through new technology. Throughout the semester the students work with the app Audacity and recording devices to work with audio clips to create audio art. Video cameras, youtube and imovie are utilized to work to create video art. Other practices of documenting time using different media explored in the class are stop animation through photography and illustration, video collages and comic strips.
