Turn Off Devices Experiment

Homework #2 (2) While having been with your computer/digital device for a while, decide to leave it and turn it off. Find artful ways to exit the online world. Monitor closely your Turn-on/Switch-off experiences and make them be the beginning of a creative experiment. Document your experience on your blog and bring the visual representation of what comes out of this into next class so we can share the outcomes.

When turning off my devices I escape the digital world. It is suddenly quite in my apartment, no murmer from the tv, no ringing or vibrating of my cell, all I hear is the subtle buzz of the refrigerator and the air conditioner. I begin to look around my living room, I see my oh so familiar furniture and although nothing has moved and everything is exactly where it always is something seems different, as if something is missing. As I continue looking around I find the blank television screen catching my gaze, I am drawn to it longing for my usual visual stimulation. I look to my left and see my laptop open, the usual assortment of windows on the screen are long gone. I keep imaging the usual activities my computer usually gives me access to.

I keep thinking about the assignment and am at a loss, I have no clue what I am going to do, I am at a creative block. I leave the room for a few minutes then I return, I sit down and then it occurs to me, it would be pretty cool to paint on the screen of my computer or television. Since that is not exactly a feasible option I begin to let my mind wander, using the concept as a jumping off point. Since my background is in graphic design it is my initial instinct to think of working with photoshop to create the visual representation of what that could look like.
